Emmett Till visited his family in the south and was murdered in August 1955 in a racist attack that shocked the nation and provided a catalyst for the emerging civil rights movement. Mamie Till kept her son’s casket open, choosing to reveal to the tens of thousands who attended the funeral the brutality that had been visited on her son. Emmett Till's murder became a rallying point for the civil rights movement.
