After the Normandy Invasion, on Dec. 16, 1944, Hitler was unhappy with the losses that he had encountered and decided to send a counteroffensive that he planned to slice through the Allied forces. Through a tough battle, the Germans were successful in breaking through the American front, surrounding them, but General Dwight D. Eisenhower sent reinforcements to the Americans almost immediately. This gave the Americans a clear sight of where to go next and throughout January American troops attacked the sides of the bulge, which allowed them to win the battle. This battle made sure that Hitler would no longer be able to launch a Western offensive to that extent again. The Battle of the Bulge is seen as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, American military battles.
