President Edvard Benes granted permisson for a communist-dominated government to be organized under pressure from the Czechoslovakian Communist Party. Doing so enabled the Communist Party to consolidate their control. The Soviet Union had been exerting pressure on Czechoslovakia since the conclusion off World War II although, under the leadership of Klement Gottwald, the Communist Party had been steadily gaining support and had already infiltrated key positions in the government and military. A coup d'etat was staged in February of 1948, forcing the other coalition parties out of the government to seize power from the democratic government and establish a communist regime. On February 25th, Benes gave in to communist demands and handed his cabinet over to the party. Rigged elections were held in May to validate the communist victory. Ultimately their success was the result of a mixture of propaganda, intimidation, and strategic use of the police and military. Soviet-style policies were implemented including the nationalization of industries, the suppression of political dissent, and the establishment of a one-party state. The country remained under communist rule until the Velvet Revolution of 1989.
