The Titan II program was a crucial development in the United States Air Force's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capabilities during the 1960s. The program introduced a second-generation ICBM, the Titan II missile. With a range of over 9,000 miles and capable of carrying a single nuclear warhead, the Titan II represented a significant increase in the US's nuclear strike capability. In 1963, forty-four of these powerful missiles were deployed across six different sites in the US. This deployment was a major milestone in the arms race during the Cold War. The Titan II program continued to serve the nation until the 1980s when it was gradually phased out in favor of newer missile systems.
