Married to her brother's best friend, Adele set out on a ship, like so many other missionary wives, to Hong Kong to meet her fiancé. Cyrus was a new missionary in Thailand and was going to be meeting Adele's ship. The captain would marry them and then they would be off to Thailand.

When Adele arrived in Hong Kong, she learned that Cyrus had died seven months earlier. She decided to stay and worked hard to share the Gospel with the people of China. She lobbied for equal pay when she learned her salary was only half of that of a man. While overseas, she taught women to read and study the Bible.

She was told to come back to America, but met some other missionaries on the way who encouraged her to stay. She stayed with them and worked 20 more years.
Upon retiring to America, she wrote books and became a speaker for missionary causes.
