Patel passed the pleader's test at the age of 25, at which point he started donning a black lawyer's coat over his kameez and dhoti as well as a red Patidar pagdi.

He borrowed money from a friend and rented a home before moving to Godhra. He started his career as a Pleader with some furniture he purchased at an auction, including a few chairs, a table, some bolsters, and a few square yards of rough matting. He made his home here with his wife Jhaverba, whom he had married nine years previously, to start their married life.
