On August 29th, 1949, Russia tested its first atomic bomb known in the west to be called Joe -1. The bomb was tested at a site in Kazakhstan. The Soviets called their first test, the First Lighting. The Soviets constructed realistic infrastructure to see how it would really affect the landscape when used in a real-life situation. They also placed animals in cages to see how it would affect human-like mammals. The bomb destroyed the infrastructure and incinerated the animals. The bomb that the Soviet Union dropped was a similar-sized explosion to that of the United States' first atomic bomb testing. This testing caused fear throughout the whole world of a nuclear attack.
