First unequal treaty
also called Treaty of Ganghwa
Who: King Kojong,
What: Korea’s first unequal treaty, that essentially “opened Korea” to Japan. Established extraterritoriality, language of communication = Korean, cuts tributary ties with China, Korea as sovereign nation.
Where: Kanghwa Island
Context: Preceded by the Unyo Incident, in which a Japanese gunboat was fired upon near Kanghwa island, also preceded by other nation’s attempts to explore Korea from the island. Led to the Korea-American treaty, and then basically every other Western power.
When: 1876
Significance: Opened Korea up to be extremely influenced by Western powers and to lose much cultural and executive power.
