Often called one of the most decisive battles in world history, the defeat of the Spanish Armada prevented Philip II of Spain from reimposing Catholicism on England by force.

Philip prepared a fleet of over 130 vessels to sail from Lisbon to Flanders in retaliation to the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots and in an attempt to re-catholicize England. They met an English fleet in the English channel, and a combination of storms and squalls, spoiled food and rank water, inadequate ammunition, and English ships caused the Spanish to scatter, and only 65 made it home.
