The documentary film For No Good Reason (*** out of four; rated R; opening Friday in select cities) offers plenty of rationales for its existence. Chief among those is the exploration of the work of a fascinating artist.
The movie peers into the mind of 77-year-old British illustrator Ralph Steadman, perhaps most famous for his work with gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Steadman illustrated the iconic cover of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In fact, he tells Thompson in archival footage that the book would never have been the sensation it was without its cover art. Thompson, predictably, scoffs.
With footage amassed over 15 years, the visually energetic documentary is filled with recollections from Steadman, as well as commentary from screenwriter and Monty Python member Terry Gilliam, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner and Thompson, who fatally shot himself in 2005.
Narrated by Johnny Depp, a portrait emerges of an anarchic, humble spirit who now fears becoming "a visual polluter."
