The DPN protest was an 8 day protest at Gallaudet University. Until then, the school had never had a deaf president. The board of trustees chose a hearing person over two more qualified deaf people to be president. The students were outraged. They shut down the school i protest. The students made 4 demands: Zinger, the new president, must resign, Spilman, the head of the board of trustees, must resign, at least 51% of the board of trustees must be deaf, and no one would be punished for the protest. There were rallies marched and people came from all over to support this. At the end of the protest all of their demands were met. I. King Johnson was chosen as president. This increased pride among the Deaf community because they showed that they are capable of running their own affairs. They are strong and they all stick together.
