With a weak Poland crumbled by failed expansion attempts and a failing monarchy and the treat of war between Austria and Russia an agreement was made to partition Poland and splitsies the remaining independent Polish states were dominated by the Russians.
The Polish king was elected and therefore limited by nobles. In the Age of Absolutism, this proved that an absolutist monarch was essential to survival.
