Rooted in Asian philosophy, the macrobiotic diet became popular in the United States when George Ohsawa wrote a book about it in 1965. The idea is that everything has an energy that needs to be balanced out. It prefers the consumption of unrefined whole grains such as brown rice, barley, millet, whole oats, and wheat berries, but does not allow processed whole grain foods such as flour.
