Edward is a deacon of the Salem Village church and the brother of Thomas and Joseph Putnam.

He filed complaints against the following people for afflicting the girls of Salem Village: Dorcas Good, Sarah Good, Mary Ireson, Rebecca Nurse, Sarah Osbourn, Tituba. Edward Putnam also testified against George Burroughs, Martha Corey, Mary Easty. Dorcas Hoar, Elizabeth Proctor, Mary Ireson, Rebecca Nurse, John Willard.
