He collected allies who were tired of the aztec rule on his way to the capitol. He was welcomed in because the leader thought that the Spanish were gods. Cotes took the leader hostage but the city revolted and many Spaniards died but the Aztecs were killed by the European disease of Smallpox. Cortes then used the troops from his allies and took of the Aztecs then making the capitol a Spanish city.
