Once Cornwallis was In New York in 1776, they had a major win over General George Washington. Him, along with General Howe, defeated America in the battle of Long Island in August 1776. Cornwallis was often a daredevil, and it paid off for him. He gathered defenders at Kips Bay in mid to late September as the British landed on Manhattan. He led a “detachment” over the Hudson river to Fort Lee, where he took over the fort, cannons, and supplies after the Americans evacuated.
