George Washington's greatest defeat was the Battle of New York (also more commonly known as the Battle of Long Island) against the British in 1776. This was the biggest battle in the Revolutionary War. This battle was caused by the British who wanted to control New York and then isolate New England from the rest of the colonies. This happened just after the Siege of Boston. George headed his 19,000 soldiers to lower Manhattan because he assumed that New York would have been the next target of the British, and he was right. They waited throughout all of June then the British came with 32,000 men and 400 ships but instead of Manhattan, they attacked Brooklyn
