We have come a long way since the early mid-1900s. Because so many women before us fought for our rights, women are now holding high positions in the government, and are being seen and heard more than ever before. But even after all of this, there is still no escaping stereotypes and high expectations. There are still the misogynists that believe women’s only role in society is to cook and clean for her husband and take care of her many children, but there is also a new expectation that seems to have developed from the feminist waves. Women have been working hard and sacrificing a lot to obtain these high-profile careers, but have found it difficult to juggle these careers with their family life. When these women decide to take a step back to spend more time with their families, they are often criticized by other women.
This also does not address the fact that women of color are still struggling to obtain those higher career positions. Discrimination in the workplace based on race is still an issue you hear about almost everyday. In fact, many companies have had to put quotas in place to make sure they have a diverse staff in the last few years. It is harder for women of color to progress in their careers due to the stereotypes that are put on them. Black women in particular are often seen as loud and angry, so if they feel they believe that they aren't being treated fairly or deserve a promotion, they might have to be extra careful with their tone and words so they aren’t categorized into that stereotype. Women of color in general are more sexualized than white women which causes them to be taken less seriously.
