Otis Redding or Mr. Pitiful for all his begging, was a major figure in soul music helped craft the sound of R&B. Redding was born and raised in Georgia and quit school when he was 15 to join Little Richard's backup band called the Upsetters. Little Richard was his idol, and thus began Redding's imitation of him.
An unscheduled recording session with Stax completely changed the trajectory of his career and he and Booker T. & the M.G.s went onto be the only two soul acts that performed at Monterey 1967.

Redding ended up having some issues with his throat and ended up getting throat surgery. Two days after the surgery he died when his brand new plane crashed, and Steve Cropper was left to finish his songs.

He famously sung "Respect" before the iconic Aretha Franklin.
