Stax was founded as Satellite records in Memphis in 1957 by Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton. The label went bankrupt however, because they made their big break recording Rufus Thomas, Stax to began work with Atlantic Records that still owns a large majority of 1959–1968 Stax Recordings.
