Founded by Berry Gordy Jr. in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, Motown was the most important black owned cable. Motown has been called The Sound of Young America or Hitsville USA and the music was intended to target young African Americans. They were a bit different from soul of Memphis as they had cleaner content and delivery.
They were the main battle vs. the British invasion and from 1961-71, had over 110 Top Ten hits.
