Formulated quantum mechanics in terms of matrices and in discovering the uncertainty principle, which states that a particle's position and momentum cannot both be known exactly.
He considered trying to measure the position of an electron with a gamma ray microscope. The high-energy photon used to illuminate the electron would change its momentum in an uncertain way.
