19 март 1286 г. - The Death of King Alexander III
Описание:
In 1286, King Alexander III of Scotland died in a horseriding accident, leading to a conflict on who would succeed as ruler. A succession of deaths within the bloodline left Scotland controlled for six years by the Guardians of Scotland before John of Balliol was elected to be King.
The Chronicle of Lanercost contains the following description from an unknown English author: " On the day following the feast of S. Agnes, the King of Scotland's son, Alexander, was taken from this world, being only twenty years of age, dying on his birthday, changing the rejoicing for his birth into a lamentation for his death; forasmuch as, had he lived, he would have been the light of his country and the joy of his kindred. “
(The Chronicle of Lanercost, 1272-1346 : Translated, with notes by Sir Herbert Maxwell)
What does this tell us about peace?
It is not certain when the Chronicle of Lanercost was written, but we can presume it was crafted near the time of the events it describes. The author's positive speech on the King of Scotland illustrated a favorable English outlook on Scottish royalty at this time. This preference for certain individuals as rulers may have been a foundational tool of peace between the two kingdoms.
