Jefferson held the office of governor of Virginia from 1779 to 1781 and a second term in Congress from 1783 to 1784. (then officially known, since 1781, as the Congress of the Confederation). He succeeded Benjamin Franklin (1706–90) as the United States' ambassador to France in 1785. Due to his obligations in Europe, Jefferson was unable to join the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention in the summer of 1787.
