California connection: said land owned by Mexicans would be respected, Land Claims Commission was created by Congress to uphold those claims, sparsely settled lands were taken and used antimonopoly Jacksonian era arguments and their size, many Californio claimants gave up and sold property at bargain prices
Cause: war, Politicians debated which territories to annex (ppl feared annexing anything south of Rio Grande b/c mixed-race ppl there would have to assimilate, only favored New Mexico and California)
