Territories of Kansas and Nebraska could decide whether they were free or slave states (popular sovereignty)
Leads to Bleeding Kansas
Brought back the controversy subdued after the Compromise of 1850
Caused the creation of the Republican Party, made up of Whigs, Democrats, Free Soilers, and Know Nothings from the North and West (stood against the expansion of slavery and the Kansas Nebraska Act)
