British and US planned to invade French North Africa, they wanted to open another front to reduce German pressure. And would soon later secure allied naval bases in the Mediterranian. Two general opposed to the plan, which made president Roosevelt angry, so he gave a direct order that Torch was to take the mission as soon as possible. Which gave the mission its name Operation Torch.
