Battle between the Americans (Benedict Arnold) and the British, who were commanded by John Burgoyne. After Burgoyne lost his native american support, he had begun to advance cautiously towards the American lines. While the British were advancing towards the American lines, Daniel Morgan (an American commander) set up marksmen around the area of the battle. The marksmen were able to kill almost every officer in the advance party. The actual battle began when Burgoyne moved some of his troops to attempt to outflank the Americans. The fighting was very intense, and the British were able to fight their way to victory. However, the Americans retreated to an advantageous position and were able to get fresh reinforcements. Because of squabbles and disputes, Benedict Arnold was removed from command. Horatio Gates was given command. The battle was, again, fierce, but the Americans had the advantage, and were able to win. The lost battle had many reprecussions in the war. Firstly, John Burgoyne returned to England and never commanded a regiment again. Secondly, the British learned that the Americans could and would fight bravely and effectively. As one British officer put it, "The courage and obstinacy with which the Americans fought were the astonishment of everyone, and we now became fully convinced that they are not that contemptible enemy we had hitherto imagined them." Additionally, the success of the Americans in this battle led King Louis XVI to begin negotiations with the Americans about sending troops.
