A stranger from the East calling himself Mstislav joins the tribe, exhibiting a keen ability to fight with a blade, killing many of Hrōþiwulfaz' best warriors. Eventually restrained by Romana's magic, Hrōþiwulfaz offers the strange, milk-white man a place in the tribe, provided he serve and protect the land and work to fill the work left by the corpses he has made.

It is around this time that members of the tribe begin to go missing.
