On October 24, MESSENGER spacecraft performs a Venus flyby. The craft was supposed to skim above Venus’ surface to get a view of the atmosphere. The burning hot planet hadn’t been visited since NASA launched their Mariner 10 mission in the 1970’s. More than half of the planet’s surface hadn’t even been mapped yet. The second time the spacecraft was to go into orbit, the planet was too close to the sun so they weren’t able to make many observations.
