After getting a blessing from George V, the Endurance anchored off from Southend, England. Although Shackleton was going to turn the whole journey down and volunteer in the World War as it had just started two months before the expedition, he got a letter from the Admiralty to proceed on the journey. He then arrived on a sub-antarctic island called South Georgia and spent a month learning the conditions of the Weddell sea and collecting materials for the expedition. After making much preparation, Shackleton left South Georgia on the 5th of December 1914.
