DETAILS
Until 1940, there was an unwritten rule that all presidents had a two-term limit set by example when President George Washington declined to take on a third term. This was seen by many as a safeguard against tyrannical power such as when the British crown exercised control on America during the Colonial era. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the first president to serve over two terms, serving up till the start of a fourth term. Seen as a danger to freedom by opponents, the Republican controlled congress passed the twentysecond amendment after his death. This amendment limited a president's term to two terms in office for a total of eight to ten years maximum serve time.
