Also known as the Third Force Act, it made Congress authorize President Ulysses S. Grant to declare Martial Law, impose heavy penalties against terrorist organizations, and use military force to suppress the KKK. 9 Counties in South Carolina were placed under Martial Law and by the time Reconstruction ended the KKK had faded away.
