The American Railway Union (ARU) began to protest against low wages, poor living conditions and 16-hour work days that the Pullman Palace Car Company was providing. In order to stop the strike President Cleveland sent in troops claiming it was his "responsibility". To add insult to injury a federal court sent an interjection to the union directing them to stop the strike. This caused the ARU to collapse because of government interferance with private industry.
