After Saul had been instructed by Yahweh, via Samuel, to destroy the Amalekites ( a people who had shown contempt for Israel and Yahweh by attacking the weak and defenceless from behind while they were traversing the wilderness for 40 yrs) and failed to do so by keeping 'the best' of the spoil against Yahweh's specific instructions, it repented Yahweh to have set up Saul as king (v11).

Samuel confronted Saul about it who tried to justify his decision and even blamed 'the people, they took...'.

Samuels response was 'because though has rejected the word of Yahweh, he has also rejected thee from being king' (v23).

After 'hewing Agag', the king of the Amalekites 'into pieces before Yahweh', Saul and Samuel went separate ways and didn't see each other again.

Yahweh then instigated the replacement for Saul by sending Samuel discretely to anoint David from the sons of Jessie.

-The anointed was revealed in the house of Jessie in Bethlehem by Samuel and a peace offering was made and partaken of before Yahweh. 16/5
-David's anointing foreshadows Christs anointing as David's greater Son.
-Samuel was sent to Anoint David just as John Baptist was sent to anoint Jesus.
-Davis was 'revealed' among his brethren just as Jesus was revealed among his brethren as Israel's spiritual anointed and to the nation as Messiah. (John 1/31)
-David was a shepherd - Jesus likewise (1 Pet 2/25; John 10/14)
- David was least esteemed among his brethren (16/11) - Jesus was likewise (Isa 53/2-4)
-David and Jesus both anointed with the Spirit, of which David's anointing with oil was the Type or Symbol (16/13) Cp. Mat 3/16-17; Acts 10/38; John 3/34; Ps 45/7.
-NOTE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SACRIFICE.

*The Sacrifice has been slain, the feast prepared (Matt 22/4) and complete sanctification is necessary. Matt 22/11-14
*How to gain sanctification -
Jn 17/17 "Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth."
Jn 15/3 "You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you."
Psa 119/9 "How can a young man keep his way pure?
By keeping Your word."
