2nd April, 2008 – Finally takes a chance to visit the Equine block. It’s been too painful to look at let alone enter. Now he’s here, he finds himself hyperventilating. He’s met by Miss Wren, one of the Equine teachers who calms him. They stand stroking one of the horses, Odysseus, a bay gelding. Miss Wren asks if he can ride. He says a bit, that he rode on holidays as a kid with his father. He gets weepy again. She asks if he’s free tomorrow. He says yes.

3rd April, 2008 – Dominic has his first riding lesson at Hillside Academy with Miss Wren who says he’s a natural. He rides Odysseus. Afterwards, she asks if he would like to have more lessons? He says he can’t afford it. She tells him not to worry but to be back there next Thursday after school.

10th April, 2008 – Second riding lesson. Still riding Odysseus. Miss Wren kits him out with spare boots, an old pair of jodhpurs and a helmet. He loves it.

23rd May, 2008 – Dominic has been riding twice a week (Thursday/Monday) for seven weeks and as excelling. Miss Wren is very pleased and Dominic is happy. He feels close to his dad. All he wants to do is tell Erika all about it. Instead, that night, he tells Tom all about his first canter. Tom listens intently and Dominic is thrilled. But also scared; he was supposed to staying away from this boy. But he just can’t.
