George Washington became the first American president under the U.S. Constitution on April 30, 1789. “As the first of everything, in our situation will serve to establish a Precedent,” he wrote, “it is devoutly wished on my part, that these precedents may be fixed on true principles.”

1.) Washington took his oath as president after a unanimous vote by the Electoral College. His election and service demonstrate his faith and strength of character, which are central to his role in history.

2.) Washington's presidency also recognizes his role not only in the Revolutionary war but in the creation of the Constitution.

3.) Lastly, his election sets the stage for his two terms as president, starting in 1789 and ending in 1797.
