On July 28, 1914, one month after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, essentially starting World War I. The decleration of the war followed a report of an unsubstantiated incident involving Hapsburg and Serbian troops. Ausria-Hungary was resolved to take strong action against Serbia, despite the fact that it knew it would risk conflict with Serbia's ally, Russia.
