American Policymakers were scared of the communist government so close to them in Cuba. President Eisenhower constructed a plan to permit the CIA to train Cuban exiles to invade Cuba and overthrow Fidel Castro. During this project Kennedy was elected over Eisenhower, but he still approved the mission, although he had doubts about it. On April 17th 1961, 1,300-1,500 Cuban exiles with US military invaded the Bay of Pigs. The troops were left outnumbered and unsupported as airstrikes conducted by the CIA had failed and 25,000 Cubans captured and killed the US/exiled invaders. Castro paraded on Kennedy and the US payed $53 million in medical supplies and provisions to release the US troops.
