In late 2009, following the Great Recession, many EU member states, particularly in southern Europe, became unable to pay interest on their loans, resulting in a series of defaults and renegotiations, often resulting in austerity members and declines in standards of living. These measures led to a rise in left and right wing populist alternatives to centrist government, many of which have become increasingly hostile to EU governance.
