After an 8 year long civil war, Algeria finally gains independence from France. The fact that European powers seem incapable of staving off anti-colonialism, even when its just across the Mediterranean and even when there's a population of in excess of 1 million settlers there, shows there's no real long term viability for colonialism, and does much to accelerate the collapse of the now greatly beleaguered British and French empires, many territories of which will receive independence in 1962.
