In advance of a referendum, German troops enter the Federal Republic of Austria and annex it to the German Reich. This is important as it is the first crack in the collapse of the international order that had been set up in the interwar years in central Europe, one that would result in continual capitulations by the Allied Powers in the form of the seizure of the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia and the eventual annexation of that country, and eventually World War II following Germany's invasion of Poland.
