Son of William George Pottinger and Meg McGregor. Father William was a civil servant jailed on corruption charges in the seventies in what was called the Poulson Affair. The Scotsman describes him as “on course to become Scotland's top civil servant and craved the knighthood that traditionally went with the job”.
