June 18th, 1948Following the unification of the British and American zones in Western Germany, Western officials introduced a new currency for West Germany called the Deutschmark. The new currency was introduced as a way to stabilize West Germans currency and boost the economy. This event is significant because it was a major reason for the Berlin Blockade.
