Transcendentalism is a philosophy that emphasizes the spiritual world VS. the physical world. One famous transcendentalist was a man by the name of Henry David Thoreau. He was also arrested for tax evasion during the Mexican-American War, due to his pacifist status (he didn't want to help fund something so violent as a war).
