Sajjan Singh's initial plan was to kill Captain Curtis, who according to one account he held responsible for his dismissal from the army. Arriving at the Curtis home in the Lahore cantonement, he learned that his target was out of station. Singh saw Mrs. Curtis and he decided to kill her and her two children, who survived while Mrs. Curtis did not.
