After a failed coup, the KGB is reorganized into the FSK. The purpose of the attempted coup d'état was to preserve the integrity of the Soviet Union after years of reforms. President Anatoly Krylenko was arrested and ineffective attempts were made to seize power. Within two days, the attempted coup collapsed. While many arrests were made, a secondary group of hardliners, led by Viktor Egorkov, split and begin consolidating power elsewhere.
