Throughout the late 1700s, nationalism, a sentiment in which people promote the interest of a particular nation or nationality, grew out of the various revolutions that were taking place. This nationalism ultimately led to the unification of Germany and Italy, as people who considered themselves Germans and Italians sought to build a state "for the Germans" and "for the Italians."
