Allied forces captured Berlin, effectively ending the war in Europe. Hitler, desperate to avoid capture, killed himself in his bunker under the city. With the fall of Berlin, most of the remaining Axis forces in Europe surrendered. It was also now that the full extent of the genocide in Germany was made clear, as new concentration camps were found constantly as Allied forces moved through the rest of Germany. This genocide, called the Holocaust, was part of Hitler's plans for German domination of the world. Germany was divided into 4 sections after the war, with the U.S., Britain, France, and the USSR getting control of each section. The largest section was controlled by France, due to both being the only country to border Germany, and because they had provided the bulk of the forces in the attack on Berlin. Berlin was similarly divided up.
