While the couple were certainly guilty, the execution itself is seen as too harsh, especially compared to the punishments of other convicted spies. Furthermore, the exact effects of the information passed is debated, and there are many other factors surrounding the pair. Finally, it can be considered neither country benefitted from the execution: the USSR just lost two spies and the US only put up a highly sensationlized event without finding out all the spies it had.
